Because life happens
Jane is a highly skilled healer of traumatic memories, deep-seated fears, anxieties and other common areas of stuckness, including money, sex, dating and codependency.
She is a renowned EMDR and trauma therapist in Minnesota where a large number of snow-days first prompted her to try working via video.
Both she and her clients were surprised to find that video-sessions frequently proved to be even more effective than in-person sessions; perhaps because clients were more at ease in the comfort of their own homes.
As a result of these successes, Jane began to offer videotherapy as part of a standard service for clients whose schedules, childcare needs or geographic location made it difficult for them to meet in the office on a regular basis. She is able to offer her full range of interventions via video, including energy psychology, tapping, and – with the help of a mini-lightbar – EMDR.
Because Jane was already set up to offer therapy online, she was able to make a seamless transition to the new order of things under COVID-19. She does suggest, however, that clients take a small space of time for themselves to mentally prepare before sessions and wind-down afterwards. Some clients who are working from home also find it helpful to do their therapy session in a different space in the house from their usual workstation. With kids and family at home, some clients resort to doing videotherapy from their closets or cars – all of which Jane has been able to work with!
Online therapy (Telehealth) is provided through a secure HIPAA-compliant video-link that is accessible by laptop, tablet and – at a pinch – a phone, and most insurance companies reimburse for sessions. Clients receive a regular time slot on Jane’s calendar or may schedule on an ad-hoc basis.
In the United States, therapy is considered a healthcare service, and therapists are licensed by their state. Although some relaxation of the rules was granted by some states to help therapists respond to the demands of COVID-19, the general rule is that therapists working with US-based clients should only be providing online therapy (Telehealth) to clients who are physically based in the state(s) in which their therapist is licensed.
Jane is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in the State of Minnesota, and is also a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist in Canada.
Clients from other states in the US or elsewhere in the world may wish to consider Therapeutic Coaching; a hybrid service for private-pay clients who do not meet criteria for significant mental health diagnoses. Clients on a tight budget are encouraged to seek therapy with a therapist licensed in their home state where they can use health insurance, FSA and HSA plans.
