What Is Energy Psychology and How Does It Help With Trauma
Aug 13, 2026
Energy psychology sounds like something you'd find at a wellness retreat between the crystal healing and the sound baths.
As an international trauma therapist and coach, I understand why.
The name doesn't help. But the results do.
And after twenty years of working with trauma in therapeutic coaching, I can tell you that energy psychology is the thing that changed everything about how fast healing actually happens.
What used to take me three or four EMDR sessions now takes about twenty minutes. That's not an exaggeration. That's just what good tools in experienced hands are supposed to do.
The Bit of Context That Actually Matters
Therapy started with lying on a couch, talking to your analyst.
Then CBT came along in the 1960s and made the whole thing much quicker, six weeks instead of ten years, but it was still primarily about talking and analyzing.
In the 1980s, mind-body approaches arrived and changed everything.
Trauma stored in the body. The body keeping the score. Stress affecting physical health.
Suddenly, it wasn't just about what we think. It was about what the body holds.

Energy Psychology Adds One More Layer on Top of All of That.
It works with the energy of the body.
Which, in the Western world, we're not very good at naming because we can't easily see or measure it. But we experience it constantly.
It's the sixth sense that tells you an argument just happened in a room you just walked into.
That a house doesn't feel like one you want to buy. That a person is safe and likeable, or shifty and dangerous, even before they've said a word.
That's energy. And when we're trying to understand what's making us anxious, stuck, or sick, it needs to be part of the conversation.
Three Systems. One Layer Nobody Talks About.
Energy psychology draws on three systems that most Western practitioners have never been formally trained in.
Meridians Come From Traditional Chinese Medicine.
They're energy pathways that move through the body's connective tissue, with acupressure points along each one. Applying pressure to these points, which is what tapping does, reduces the charge around trauma, anxiety, and distress remarkably quickly.
Chakras Come From Ancient Indian Spiritual Traditions.
They're spinning energy centers positioned along the central axis of the body, each corresponding to specific physiological and psychological domains.
One energy psychology approach, AIT (Advanced Integrative Therapy), uses the chakra system for trauma clearing and produces results as powerful as EMDR but as gentle as a Reiki session.
The Biofield is the Western Term for What Eastern Traditions Call the Aura.
The magnetic and electrical fields are generated by the heart and brain.
This is the energy others feel in us as we move through the world.
When we have unconscious fears or blocking beliefs, the biofield broadcasts them even when our words don't. Identifying and clearing these inconsistencies through muscle testing and heart-coherence exercises can change everything.
In relationships, in high-stakes conversations, in any situation where what we say and what we actually communicate need to match. That gap is often where the real problem lives.

But Is There Actually Evidence for This?
Yes. More than most people realize.
Over 100 randomized controlled trials.
87 pre-post clinical outcome studies. 99% of those studies show energy psychology to be effective. Five fMRI studies document neurological changes after energy psychology interventions. Documented effectiveness for trauma, PTSD, depression, pain, food cravings, and peak athletic performance.
For the high-functioning trauma clients I work with- the executives, the medical professionals, the globally mobile professionals who want evidence before they try something- the evidence is there. This isn't alternative medicine dressed up in clinical language. It's a clinically validated approach that most practitioners just haven't been trained in yet.
How I Actually Use It. And Why I Don't Explain It First.
If you went to a surgeon to repair a wound, you wouldn't weigh in on which layer of skin to work on first.
You'd trust them to do their job.
That's how I approach energy psychology at therapyjane. I listen to what's going on, find the root of the distress or the block, and depending on the issue, use tapping, scripts, or a combination of both to shift it.
The results speak for themselves. Most clients don't need to understand the mechanism for it to work; they just need to notice that the thing that felt charged and stuck has quietly stopped feeling that way.
My Journey to Energy Psychology Wasn't Direct.
It started with tapping, which I'd been using alongside EMDR without realizing it was an energy psychology technique.
About 10 years ago, I found ACEP, the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, and completed their formal training. Muscle testing, intention scripts, and chakra interventions got added to my toolkit, and I've been going to their conference every year since.
Speaking at the last five.
Every year, I come back with something new. And faster.
When COVID hit, and everything went online overnight, I developed the hybrid approach of traditional psychotherapy, EMDR, and energy psychology that I still use today.
Who This Works Best For. And Who Fights It.
Energy psychology used in therapeutic coaching works beautifully for clients who find it hard to access their feelings verbally.
The ones who've been stuck for years despite doing all the right things. The ones who've tried EMDR therapy online or talk therapy and hit a ceiling they can't explain. And because everything happens online, it's accessible for internationally mobile professionals, expats, and aid workers wherever they happen to be in the world.
The one group that tends to resist it: people, often men, who want to talk and analyze everything before doing anything.
That preference for staying in the head is a way of maintaining control and keeping a safe distance from pain. But with a few tweaks here and there, energy psychology lets them maintain that distance, and still get it feeling better.
Which is exactly what they need most.

Ready to Try Something That Actually Moves Things? Work With an International Trauma Therapist and Coach
Therapeutic coaching with energy psychology isn't going to make you feel worse. It's gentle, it's quick, and honestly? It doesn't feel like therapy. Which is exactly why it works so well for the people who've been most resistant to getting help.
As an international trauma therapist and coach working entirely online, my practice is based in British Columbia, and I work with clients around the world. Wherever you are, we can work together.
When you're ready, here's how we begin:
- Book a One-Time Healing Session: A one-time healing session is the fastest way to experience energy psychology for yourself. One issue, one session, and you'll know by the end whether this is the right fit.
- Book Your Discovery Session: Ready for deeper work? Book a discovery session. This is where we map your history, identify the patterns, and build a plan that's built around you.
- Get to Know Me First: Not quite ready? Fair enough. Have a look at my about page, read a few more posts, and get a feel for who I am and how I work. I'll still be here when you're ready.
- Show Up From Wherever You Are: A home office in Dubai, a kitchen table in Melbourne, a flat in Lisbon. All you need is an internet connection and a private space. I'll handle everything else.
Other Ways to Work With Me
Energy psychology used in therapeutic coaching is one of the tools I use, but it rarely works alone. At therapyjane, it sits inside a broader approach that brings together everything that actually moves the needle.
If you're ready to go deeper, International Therapeutic Coaching is where the full toolkit comes together: EMDR, tapping, energy psychology, and parts work, built around a personalized plan for your specific patterns and themes. If you want to start with one focused session before committing to anything longer, a One-Time Healing Session lets you experience the work directly. One issue, one session, real movement.
For practitioners wanting to bring these tools into their own clinical work, the Live and On-Demand Courses teach energy psychology, EMDR, and trauma-informed approaches in a way that's immediately applicable, not just theoretically interesting. And if you're a therapist, coach, or healer wanting case-specific guidance, Consulting and Mentoring are available for exactly that.
Whatever brings you here, there's a way in that fits.
