Why You Can Understand Your Trauma Completely and Still Not Be Able to Shift It
Oct 29, 2026
You know the pattern. Not just in a vague "I have issues" kind of way.
You can name the exact childhood experience that set it in motion, describe how it shows up in your relationships and your work.
Self-awareness is genuinely impressive. And it hasn't shifted the pattern one bit.
Therapeutic coaching works with this particular kind of stuck more than almost anything else.
Because the gap between understanding a pattern and actually shifting it isn't a motivation problem, a commitment problem, or a failure of the work you've already done.
It's a memory problem. And once you understand what kind, the whole thing starts to make sense.
Knowing It and Feeling It Are Two Different Things.
Memory isn't one thing stored in one place.
There's explicit memory: the story you can tell about what happened, the narrative, and the timeline, the understanding of cause and effect.
This is what therapy and coaching work with most naturally, and it's genuinely valuable.
Building a coherent story about your experience is part of how the brain processes it.
Then There's Implicit Memory: The Body's Version of Events.
Automatic responses that fire before a thought has formed. A particular tone of voice that makes your chest tighten before you've registered what was said.
The pattern that activates in a conflict before you've consciously decided how to respond.
Insight lives in explicit memory. The pattern lives in implicit memory.
They're stored differently and accessed differently. Changed by entirely different processes.
You can update the story without updating the nervous system. And until the nervous system updates, the pattern keeps running, regardless of how clearly you understand it.
This isn't a failure of the process. It's just how memory works.
Why the Most Self-Aware People Are Often the Most Stuck.
This is the part that surprises people.
Clients who can articulate their patterns most precisely are often the ones who have been stuck in them the longest.
The one who knows exactly which childhood dynamic is playing out in their marriage and still finds themselves in the same argument every week.
Or the high-achiever who can explain their self-sabotage in clinical detail and still can't stop it from happening.
The very skills that make someone brilliant at self-reflection, analytical thinking, pattern recognition, holding complexity, can actually get in the way of the felt shift that healing requires.
This Is the Part Nobody Wants to Hear.
Not because the skills are wrong. Because they keep the work in the head, which is exactly where the pattern is most comfortable.
Staying in the head is often the most effective way of not having to feel what's in the body.
For high achievers, it's also usually what they're best at.
The head is safe, familiar, and socially rewarded. The body is where the unresolved material lives. And as long as the analysis stays in the head, the pattern stays intact.
What Needs to Happen That Insight Can't Do.
The nervous system doesn't update through understanding. It updates through experience.
That's the whole thing, really. You can't think your way to a felt shift. You can't explain your way there either.
The body needs to actually experience something different, not just hear a better story about what happened.
This is why approaches that work directly with the body get results when talk alone hasn't. Not because talking has no value, it genuinely does, but because it's doing a different job. Understanding what happened and updating how the body holds it are two separate pieces of work.
The moment of shift is hard to describe but unmistakable when it happens.
A memory that used to feel present and live starts to feel past and settled. Clients describe it as the difference between a wound and a scar.
Both are real. Only one still hurts when touched.
Right. So What Do You Actually Do With This?
Here's where to actually put that understanding to work.
Stop explaining it to yourself.
You already know the explanation.
Reaching for it again when the pattern activates is the pattern keeping you in your head. Next time it comes up, notice where you feel it in the body instead.
What's the physical sensation? Where does it live? How big is it on a scale of zero to ten?
That's your actual starting point.
Let the understanding be enough for now.
You don't need more insight.
What you need is someone who can work with what you already know at the level where it's actually stored.
The map isn't the territory. You have an excellent map.
Now you need someone to go there with you.
Find a practitioner who works at the level of the body.
Therapeutic coaching online that integrates somatic and energy psychology is specifically built for this gap.
Not to replace the understanding you've already built, but to give it somewhere to land.
Ready to Close the Gap? Work With an International Trauma Therapist and Coach
As an international trauma therapist and coach offering therapeutic coaching online, based in British Columbia and working with clients around the world, this is some of the most meaningful work there is.
When you're ready, here's how to begin:
- Book a One-Time Healing Session: A great place to experience what it feels like when the pattern finally starts to shift at the level where it actually lives. One session, one focus, and a real sense of what's possible.
- Book Your Discovery Session: Ready for something deeper? This is where we map your history, understand what the nervous system has been holding, and build a plan for the work ahead.
- Get to Know Me First: Not quite ready? Fair enough. Have a look at my about page, read a few more posts, and get a feel for who I am and how I work. I'll still be here when you're ready.
- Show Up From Wherever You Are: Whether you're in Hong Kong, Amsterdam, or anywhere in between, the work happens entirely online. All you need is an internet connection and a private space. I'll handle everything else.
Other Ways to Work With Me
If this blog landed somewhere, there's likely a next step that fits.
For coaches and therapists who want to understand the implicit memory piece and learn how to work with it effectively in their clients, the Live and On-Demand Courses cover exactly that, including the somatic and energy psychology approaches that close the gap most training doesn't address.
For one-to-one support on a specific client whose insight work has hit a ceiling, Consulting and Mentoring is available for practitioners who want experienced guidance on where to go next.
If you're reading this as someone who recognizes themselves in the stuck-despite-understanding description, International Therapy and Coaching is where that finishing work happens, wherever you are in the world.
And for those who want to experience what it actually feels like when knowing finally becomes shifting, a One-Time Healing Session is the place to start.
Wherever you are in the process, there's a way to go further.
